יונה 1:1 ויהי דבר־יהוה אל־יונה בן־אמתי לאמר׃
יונה 1:2 קום לך אל־נינוה העיר הגדולה וקרא עליה כי־עלתה רעתם לפני׃
יונה 1:3 ויקם יונה לברח תרשׁישׁה מלפני יהוה וירד יפו וימצא אניה באה תרשׁישׁ ויתן שׂכרה וירד בה לבוא עמהם תרשׁישׁה מלפני
יהוה׃
יונה 1:4 ויהוה הטיל רוח־גדולה אל־הים ויהי סער־גדול בים והאניה חשׁבה להשׁבר׃
יונה 1:5 וייראו המלחים ויזעקו אישׁ אל־אלהיו ויטלו את־הכלים אשׁר באניה אל־הים להקל מעליהם ויונה ירד אל־ירכתי הספינה
וישׁכב וירדם׃
יונה 1:6 ויקרב אליו רב החבל ויאמר לו מה־לך נרדם קום קרא אל־אלהיך אולי יתעשׁת האלהים לנו ולא נאבד׃
יונה 1:7 ויאמרו אישׁ אל־רעהו לכו ונפילה גורלות ונדעה בשׁלמי הרעה הזאת לנו ויפלו גורלות ויפל הגורל על־יונה׃
יונה 1:8 ויאמרו אליו הגידה־נא לנו באשׁר למי־הרעה הזאת לנו מה־מלאכתך ומאין תבוא מה ארצך ואי־מזה עם אתה׃
יונה 1:9 ויאמר אליהם עברי אנכי ואת־יהוה אלהי השׁמים אני ירא אשׁר־עשׂה את־הים ואת־היבשׁה׃
יונה 1:10 וייראו האנשׁים יראה גדולה ויאמרו אליו מה־זאת עשׂית כי־ידעו האנשׁים כי־מלפני יהוה הוא ברח כי הגיד להם׃
יונה 1:11 ויאמרו אליו מה־נעשׂה לך וישׁתק הים מעלינו כי הים הולך וסער׃
יונה 1:12 ויאמר אליהם שׂאוני והטילני אל־הים וישׁתק הים מעליכם כי יודע אני כי בשׁלי הסער הגדול הזה עליכם׃
יונה 1:13 ויחתרו האנשׁים להשׁיב אל־היבשׁה ולא יכלו כי הים הולך וסער עליהם׃
יונה 1:14 ויקראו אל־יהוה ויאמרו אנה יהוה אל־נא נאבדה בנפשׁ האישׁ הזה ואל־תתן עלינו דם נקיא כי־אתה יהוה כאשׁר חפצת
עשׂית׃
יונה 1:15 וישׂאו את־יונה ויטלהו אל־הים ויעמד הים מזעפו׃
יונה 1:16 וייראו האנשׁים יראה גדולה את־יהוה ויזבחו־זבח ליהוה וידרו נדרים׃
Literal translation of the Hebrew:
Yonah 1
1 and it came to be YHVH spoke to Yonah son of Amti to say
2 get yourself up unto Ninuah(or Ninoah) the great city and call out to them that their evil has come up before Me
3 and Yonah got up and ran away to Tarshish from before YHVH and he went down to Yafo and found a boat coming from Tarshish and he gave a reward(paid a fare implied) and went down into it(on board implied) and came with them to Tarshish from before YHVH(away from Him implied)
4 and YHVH cast down a great wind upon the sea and there was a great storm on the sea and they thought the boat would break up
5 and the sailors looked and cried each man unto his god and they took their articles(cargo) which were on the boat and put them into the sea to lighten it and Yonah went down to the stern of the boat and lay down and fell asleep
6 and they approached him and the chief rigger said to him, "why are you falling asleep, get up and cry unto your God maybe we will be saved and God will be with us and we will not be lost".
7 and they said one man to another, "go and cast lots(literally drop destinies) and we will know the evil among us and fate's lot fell on Yonah
8 and they said to him, "tell us because of whom is this evil, what is your job and where do you come from, what is your earth(your country implied) and what's wrong with you?"
9 and he said to them, I am a Hebrew and YHVH my God of the heavens I fear, Who made the sea and the dry(land implied)
10 and the people looked with great fear and said to him, "what did you do?"because the people knew that from before YHVH he ran away because he had told them
11 and they said to him, "what will be done with you and the sea will calm for us because the sea is getting stormy"
12 and he said to them, "lift me up and throw me into the sea and the sea will calm for you because I know that because of me this great storm is over you".
13 and the people strove to return to dry land and could not because the sea was storming over them(engulfing them implied)
14 and they cried unto YHVH and said to Him, "please lose not the soul of this man and give upon us clean blood for You are YHVH Who does as He will"
15 and they lifted up Yonah and cast him into the sea and the sea became calm
16 and the people looked with great fear of YHVH and they offered sacrifices unto YHVH and made vows
