Luke 21

Updated: Jul 24, 2022

Literal translation from the Greek:

Luke 21

but look again(or up) and see the rich putting their gifts(offerings) into the sanctuary treasury box

but look at the poor widow who put in two lepta(=a thin small coin)

and saying to them, I tell you the truth this poor widow put in more than all

for all these put in from their abundance into God's gifts(offerings) but from her poverty she put in all which is necessary for life(livelihood implied)

and some speak about the sanctuary because of its beautiful stones and say it is decorated as a gift

they who look on will see the days in which not one stone will be left upon another stone that will not be destroyed

but they asked saying, Teacher when then will this be and what will be the sign when this is about to happen?

but He said, see that you are not deceived for many will come in My Name saying that I am(I am He) and the appointed time is at hand but do not go after them

but when you hear of wars and disorder(rioting), fear not because these must happen first but the end is not straight away

then He said, tribe(nation, gentile) upon tribe(nation, gentile) and kingdom upon kingdom will awaken,

earth quakes both great and in many places also famines and plagues will be frightening and signs from heaven(sky) will be great

but before these all come over you, their hands also will persecute delivering you unto the churches(congregations, the gathered) and imprison and lead you before kings and rulers for My Name's sake

but you will be My witness

therefore set it in your hearts not to think beforehand to defend(account for) yourself

for I will give you a mouth(the words implied) and wisdom which none of all they who oppose you will be able to speak against nor resist

but you will be delivered up(betrayed) by parents and brothers and relatives and will put from(some of you implied) you to death

and you will be hated by all because of My Name

and no not one hair from your head is lost(or dies)

in your patience you keep your souls(minds)

but when you see Yerushalem surrounded by an army then know its destruction is near

then those in Judea flee into the mountains and they in that region do not come into it(into Judea implied)

those days this punishment is the fulfilment of all that is written

but alas(woe to) those who are pregnant and breastfeeding in those days for there will be great need(distress) upon the earth and anger(violence) in these people

and they will fail their war of the mouth(war of words) and make them captive into all the tribes and Yerushalem will be tread underfoot by the tribes(nations, gentiles) until the appointed time of the tribes(nations, gentiles) is full

and there will be signs in the sun and the moon and the stars and upon the earth the tribes(nations, gentiles) in distress(anxiety), perplexed at the roaring sea and waves

men(or mankind) will faint from fear and apprehension comes over the world because the forces(powers) of the heavens(skies) will be shaken

and then will appear the Son of man coming in a cloud with much power and glory

moreover (when) these begin to happen, stand up and lift up your heads because your redemption(deliverance, salvation) draws near(is at hand)

and He told His parable, see the fig tree and all the trees

when they put out leaves even now, see for yourselves knowing that even now summer is near

so also you when you see this happen know that the Kingdom of God is near(at hand)

amen(so be it) I tell you that this generation will not pass until all this has happened

the heaven and the earth will pass away but My words never pass

but you yourselves beware(be careful) that you are not weighed down(burdened) in your hearts by revelling(drinking and partying) and drunkenness by the unforeseen worries of life upon you, be present(stand, be at hand) that day

because as a snare(trap, trick, temptation) it will come upon all the remnant on the face of the whole earth

keep awake(watch) therefore in all(at every) appointed time(seasons) praying so that you may be counted worthy to escape all that is about to happen and stand before(or in the presence of) the Son of man

but during the day He was teaching in the sanctuary and He went and spent the night on the hill called olives(or olive trees)

and all the people rose early to be near Him in the sanctuary to hear Him
